Since going off my birth control to try to conceive, my acne has flared big time. My dermatologist does not recomend using over the counter acne medicine such as Persa-Gel which contains benzoyle peroxide becuase it is unknown if it is safe for pregnant women or women who are trying to conceive. I have used Proactive in the past and it has worked really well for me. I am not pregnant but am trying to conceive. Ultimately I plan to consult my OBGYN on this but I’m curious to find out what information others have.

Women and acne
Hormonal wise men and women are very different. The acne effects also have different psychological and physical impact on men and women. The majority of the males develop acne at puberty where as females start having acne in their 20s.
A woman’s fertility cycle comes with hormonal changes that can trigger temporary changes throughout the body sometimes causing acne outbreaks. Currently the process is not completely understood. Androgens regulate the sebaceous glands activity and so high levels of this hormone are most likely the culprit for premenstrual acne.
The higher the androgen level the bigger the risk of pores clogged with sebum.

Any suggestions?
