With adult acne on the increase in most western countries, it is little wonder that people are starting to look at their diet to see if there is indeed a link between what we eat and the appearance of spots.

We are constantly assured by many of our doctors that “there is no scientific evidence that links diet to acne”. The fact that in the medical world, skin is often referred to as the ‘third kidney’, due to its ability to cleanse the body by expelling toxins, makes this assurance questionable.

Maybe the problem with acne is that it is such a guaranteed money maker. Why would anyone want to back up the diet claim when there is so much money to be made through pharmaceutical drugs and medicated skincare products?

It is interesting to know that many people have indeed cleared up their acne simply by changing their diet. The problem with diet is that we are all very different and what diet works for one person simply might not work for another hence the reason why the acne v diet debate continues.

Food intolerance is a subject that is often written about and yet few people really understand what it is about or apply the information to themselves. For many adults, acne is just one of their many health problems. Other common health problems associated with acne include, fatigue, anxiety and depression. These are seldom linked to acne and yet many people have found that by tweaking their diet here and there and avoiding certain foodstuffs, not only have they got rid of their acne but their overall health has improved, they have more energy and any anxiety and depression have disappeared.

Foods that cause people the most problems are, sugar, yeast, dairy (milk and all foods containing milk), gluten, wheat and spicy foods.

Good health and clear skin relies upon a healthy digestive system. Never assume that your body can digest everything that you choose to eat.

It is important for any acne sufferer to take a food diary of everything they eat and drink for a week, noting beside each day the condition of their skin. Many acne sufferers have found the solution to their acne simply by this process and have avoided having to take any drugs or buy any expensive skincare products.

To ensure a healthy digestive system, choose natural foods such as fruit, vegetables and brown rice. If you are able to digest wheat and gluten then opt for brown seeded bread which takes longer to digest. Add fruit, nuts and seeds to natural yogurt for a healthy breakfast. Leave cakes, sweets, burgers, fast food as treats to be eaten now and again. Invest in a Low GI cook book and learn to cook healthy and nutritious food that will nourish your skin.

To ensure that your food is being digested properly, eat slowly and never drink with your meal. Digestive enzymes prove beneficial for many people and are available from most health stores. Aloe Vera Juice is also beneficial for digestion and is available from most health stores and some large supermarkets.

Prebiotics/Probiotics are also beneficial especially if you have taken your fair share of antibiotics during the years and have been using the contraceptive pill. Your colon contains 80% good bacteria and 20% yeast, antibiotics and the ‘pill’ kill off the good bacteria, which allows the yeast to take over, and the result is a condition called Candidiasis. It is estimated that one third of the western population has this condition. If you are dealing with other health issues as well as acne, then it is vital that you test for this condition as it may be the root cause of your acne. A nutritionist, homeopathic or naturopathic doctor will be the best person to seek advice from as many GP’s do not acknowledge that this condition exists.

All acne prescription drugs come with the risk of unwanted side effects therefore viewing these as a last resort and opting for the safe approach of eating healthily and caring for your digestive system will ensure good health, clear skin and hopefully and long and happy life.

Acne has become one of the problems plaguing millions of people today. People from all ages are prone to this infection but it is most common to adolescents because of the hormonal changes occurring in their body. Infections may vary from mild to moderate to severe wherein almost the entire surface of the face is covered with whiteheads, blackheads, lesions, cysts and nodules. This could be very devastating and will greatly affect a person self esteem.

In order to fight acne, first you have to understand what it is, what causes it and how to prevent it.

What is Acne?

Acne is a skin disease that is commonly seen in the face, back, neck and chest. This occurs when your oil glands produces more oil called sebum (excessive sebum production is usually brought about by hormone changes), this excess oil can get trapped in your pores and when this happens bacteria begins to grow which causes whiteheads, blackheads and pimples.

The 4 Causes Acne

There are a lot of factors that could lead to acne and being aware of them increases your chances of preventing infection. Although the real cause of acne is still to be determined.

1. Genes – Sad as it may seem but it is true that acne can be inherited. In these cases, a professional advice may be best in order to find the treatment suitable for you.

2. Poor Diet – Proper diet will help maintain good health and if you are healthy it will show in your skin. Load up with fruits and vegetables as these contain anti-oxidants and fibers that will help clean your system. Avoid food that has preservatives as your body might react on the chemicals and cause acne.

3. Stress – I’m sure you have noticed that whenever you are stressed your face gets oilier and you get pimples. This is because of the hormonal activity related to stress that stimulates our adrenal glands to produce more oil or sebum.

4. Environment – Living in a humid environment will make you sweat more, although sweat does not directly cause pimple but it could block your pores. Living in a dirty environment is also a factor since dirt can and will block your pores.

Other factors are identifiable with acne, we just have to be aware and try to determine what is causing them in order to treat them.

The 3 Acne Prevention Tips

Don’t ever think that you’re immune to it just because you don’t have it, everybody is prone to acne, so before that first sign, follow these simple tips.

1. Keep Your Face Clean – Wash your face when needed. Whenever your face is oily, after being exposed to pollution, after a sweaty exercise etc…Washing gets rid of excess oil and dead skin cells that might block your pores.

2. Drink Plenty of Fluids – Water cleanses your internal system by flushing out harmful toxins and excess oil. Pineapple juice also helps clean your system and it has high amounts of Vitamin C and B1 that is important in maintaining a healthy skin.

3. Drink Tea – If you’re wondering why the Chinese people have beautiful skin it is because they are drinking significant amounts of tea. Tea is rich in anti-oxidants that helps rid your body of harmful chemicals.

Preventing acne is always better than curing them, it takes discipline especially if you don’t see any sign of acne in you body. But wouldn’t it be nice to keep it that way?

If you think that acne is a problem only teenagers and adults face, think again. Infants can also have signs of acne. They could have breakouts as early as 2-3 weeks after birth. Baby acne is more common in the in the facial area (cheeks, chin and forehead) and they can even have back acne in this early stage of life.

Baby acne should not be mistaken with milia or eczema. Milia are also known as milk spots. These are small, hard and white-colored spots that usually disappear in about two weeks. Eczema, on the other hand, is a type of skin inflammation and is more serious than acne. Symptoms of eczema include scaling and blisters. Whiteheads are also an issue and these are small bumps, either white or flesh-colored, that are caused by blocked pores. You would know that your child has acne if pimples start to appear within their first month.

Some medical studies show that baby acne could start forming while babies are still in their mother’s womb. In the latter stage of pregnancy, a mother’s hormones are passed through the placenta and are received by the fetus. This can actually stimulate your baby’s oil glands and with the presence of oil, acne can easily appear. This is why some babies would appear to have red pimples even right after birth.

To prevent acne, be sure that you are not using strong detergents in washing your baby’s clothes. Some detergents may contain harsh chemicals that can aggravate the skin. Immediately wipe any food, drinks, or saliva that may drip off from your baby’s mouth as this may worsen baby acne.

Always see to it that your baby’s face is cleaned with water and a mild soap every day. Do not try to scrub their face because baby’s skin is so sensitive and scrubbing would cause reddening. Do not use any oils and lotions that are not recommended by your doctor. These may irritate your baby’s skin easily. You should be alarmed if your baby’s acne problem lasts for more than six months. It is important to get your doctor’s advice if baby acne gets worse.

MAYBE YOU’VE COME across the term on a skincare product – and mores specifically – an acne prevention product. Maybe you read it on a medical website or heard it on a news program – but what exactly does “comedogenic” mean? And how can understanding it help improve men skin care and prevent acne? MenScience Androceuticals tackles these questions and provides the answers you need to insure you choose the right products to keep your skin looking its best – without acne breakouts.

What Does “comedogenic” Mean?

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, a “comedo” is an “acne lesion”, a hard blockage created from an excess of sebum in a pore. This blockage can lead to whiteheads, blackheads and pimples, so “comedogenic” refers to ingredients or products that have a tendency to block pores and promote comedones (plural of comedo), or acne.

Acne often forms from an overproduction of sebum (the oily substance on the skin) and bacteria (known as P. acnes), but when pores become clogged with sebum, bacteria can rapidly grow and whiteheads (clogged pores that have reached the surface), blackheads (clogged pores which have reached skin’s surface and darkened due to bacteria’s oxidation), and pustules (clogged pores which remain below the surface) begin to appear.

Although non-comedogenic skincare products may not prevent acne, they do not promote pore-clogging and acne production, either. Non-comedogenic ingredients and products are recommended by dermatologists and medical professionals for people who have oily or acne-prone skin, but all men should use non-comedogenic products to keep pores clear of acne causing bacteria and skin blemish free. MenScience takes acne seriously – which is why all products are formulated to be non-comedogenic.

Comedogenic Ingredients

Medical experts have a hard time classifying ingredients that are comedogenic because what may clog the pores of one man’s skin and cause breakouts may not affect another man’s skin at all. However, there are some ingredients that have a higher tendency to product acne comedones than others, and we’ve provided a few of them below. If you already suffer from oily or acne-prone skin, keep an eye out for these comedogenic ingredients when purchasing products:

- Cocoa Butter

- Pigments & Dyes (red in particular)

- Coal Tar

- Lanolin

- Isopropyl Myristate

How to Choose Non-Comedogenic Products to Help Treat Acne

No matter what type of skin you have, it’s always a good idea for men to stick to non-comedogenic skincare, shaving and grooming products to help control acne. When purchasing products, be on the lookout for specific comedogenic ingredients to help treat acne and choose products that are lightweight and non-greasy. Keep in mind the following tips when choosing these common men’s shaving and skincare products:

Moisturizers: Look for products that are described as oil-free and lightweight. Consistency should be thin, but still substantial. Once the product is applied, it should absorb quickly into the skin and not feel like it is layered on the surface. Choose products like the MenScience Advanced Face Lotion that have water-binding agents and soothing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin E and glycerin.

Cleansers: Your daily cleanser should be pore-clearing and contain deep cleaning ingredients such as salicylic and glycolic acid, which help control acne. These clear away oil and grime, without clogging pores or upsetting the face’s natural moisture levels. Cleansers that contain aloe vera extract are beneficial for men with acne-prone skin since they help soothe irritation and redness.

Sunscreens: Although many sunblocks tend to feel heavy, research has shown that many UV-blocking ingredients are not comedogenic. However, it’s important to use a sunblock that is non-greasy and absorbs immediately into skin like MenScience’s TiO2 Sunblock SPF 30. Also, be sure to completely wash away old sunblock you’ve put on throughout the day to further prevent acne comedones from forming!

Shaving Products: Shaving can aggravate blemishes and acne, so choose products that contain soothing, lubricating, water-based (not alcohol-based) ingredients such as aloe, allantoin and tea tree extract. This will keep pores clear, bypassing shaving irritation and acne.

Comedogenic Behavior

Even if you do use non-comedogenic products to keep your pores clear and reduce acne breakouts, you may find that you are still breaking out with acne pimples, blackheads and whiteheads. This could be because you may have some comedogenic habits. After all, acne thrives on bacteria, and there are many instances during the day when bacteria can be easily transported from your hands to your face. To keep bacteria levels down and prevent acne, consider the following tips:

According to a study by the American Society for Microbiology and the Soap and Detergent Association, one-third of all men don’t wash their hands after using the bathroom. This means there’s a lot of men walking around with germ-ridden hands. Since acne is caused by bacteria, every time you touch your face with your unclean hands, you’re spreading acne-causing germs. Keep your hands clean by washing them regularly with warm, soapy water, and don’t touch your face too often.

Have frequent bouts of acne around your jaw line? Your phone could be the culprit. Germs from your hands can easily be transmitted to hand-held devices, and sebum from your face can rub off on them as well. To prevent the spread of acne causing bacteria and kill germs, wipe your phone (office, cell phone, and home) down every week or two with an antibacterial wipe or a cotton ball dampened with rubbing alcohol. This also works for remote controls and computer keyboards.

If you still have trouble with acne, try an acne regimen, like MenScience’s Acne Treatment System

Most people consider acne and pimples as something disturbing only adolescents and the youth, yet what lots of people don’t understand is that acne isn’t just a crisis for young people, it can also represent a substantial problem for a lot of adults too.

Acne is caused in general by a range of different causes, lots of of these causes are linked to unstable hormone levels, whereas others are caused by excessively high sebum (a greasy substance secreted from the pores, and hair follicles) levels which causes clogged skin pores and enables the growth of surface bugs which results in infections, blackheads, acne, pimples and zits.

Whatever the actual cause of the acne and pimples, it’s still true that numerous adults, (particularly women, who will be twice as likely as men) will end up with outbreaks of acne at various stages of their adult lives.

Many people will choose to go on the self assessment route, and seek treatment from a drug store, using any one of a wide range of potions or lotions to apply to their zits. This only has a limited effect usually, and even though it may help initially, it will often flare up again, and can often come back far worse, because the root cause of the acne hasn’t been treated to begin with.

The answer to successfully treat acne, zit, or pimple outbreaks , and to stop new ones, is to treat the root causes of the quandary, not just topically on the surface but through more natural ways, knowing the essential basis for the skin breakouts, and recapturing the balance internally that your body is attempting to convey it is complelety out of balance through the outbreaks of acne, and pimples.

So, as an adult, when you start to feel that next pimple, or zit starting to rise to the surface, take it for what it is, and just be aware of what it is. it is your body’s method of telling you to balance things up again, that your lifestyle, and your eating, your stress levels, and even your hormones are potentially all out of balance. Once you comprehend that, you then have the essential ingredients to understand how to get the needs your body requires.

The very first thing you must understand when trying to cure your acne is the type of acne that you actually have. This is significant because it gives insight into what may have actually caused the acne outbreak in the first place. And of course, once you know exactly what it is that triggers the acne, you have an advantage to either preventing it from happening again, or effectively treating it as it occurs.

There are many forms of acne, which would explain why it is so difficult to treat. I have listed several causes of acne and many of those may surprise you, but I also hope that they will help you discover what causes your acne. For instance, a great many people would likely be surprised to learn that acne is not caused by stress, as they may think, but more likely can be attributed to their fancy new perfume or cologne.

Adult acne can be caused by a hormonal imbalances, pollution, medications, or stress to name a few. Studies have shown a direct correlation between hormonal imbalances and outbreaks of acne in women ranging in age from 30 to 40 years.

Acne Cosmetic is just what it sounds like. It is the outbreak of acne due to the aggravation of the skin and pores caused by the active ingredients contained in the cosmetics that you wear.

Acne Conglobata can cause serious scarring on the face and back and it is usually attributed to hereditary factors. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot that can be done here.

Acne Detergens is the result of the use of soaps and cleaners that cause an irritating effect on the skin.

Acne Excoriee is actually brought about by the constant picking of the pimples on the face and body. This, perhaps more than all the other symptoms, can and should be avoided.

Acne Fulminans is a very serious form of acne that can accompany a fever and body aches. This acne is predominantly found amongst males and it includes the abrupt onset of acne, severe scarring, fever, loss of appetite and a high white blood cell count.

Acne Keloidalis is common among people of African descent. It usually flares up in and around the neck area.

Acne Mallorca is brought on by exposure to sunlight.

Acne mechanica is caused by materials and fabrics such as clothing and purse straps that chafe against bare skin.

Acne Medicametosa is a side effect of certain medications which include oral contraceptives and over the counter drugs that contain potassium iodide, chlorine and bromide.

Acne Neonatorum is acne that affects infants. It is transferred by way of hormones from the mother to the child.

Acne Pomade is commonly caused by the use of oils found in hair care products. The oil migrates from the hair to the forehead, where it can clog pores and cause acne.

The bottom line is that there are many forms of acne. By taking simple precautions and knowing what causes irritation in your specific case can greatly improve your control of the condition. One great tip is to avoid touching your face with your fingers. The majority of people have no idea how dirty their fingers really are and in many cases the occurrence of outbreaks can be avoided.

Acne, as you may know, affects more than ninety percent of the world’s population at some time in their life. It is in fact the most common skin disorder treated by dermatologist and most of its victims are teenagers and adults.

According to some scientific research, acne is caused by different factors like hormones, bacteria, and some genetic factors. Some even said that acne is caused by a poor diet, to which many did not agree.

Well, the acne and diet issue has been studied for several years. Although some dermatologist claimed that diet has nothing to do with the formation of acne, many still hold that acne and diet has a certain link. Acne and diet are somehow correlated as diet plays a role in the development of acne.

Here’s a common explanation that will show how acne and diet are connected.

Certain studies have found out that eating refined carbohydrates and sugar leads to a surge of insulin as well as an insulin-like growth factor known as IGF-1 in the body. If this forms, it then can lead to an excess of male hormones, androgens, which are deemed as the most potent cause of the acne formation.

The acne and diet connection maintains that if an excess of male hormones is produced, the pores of the skin will secrete sebum or oil, which is a greasy substance that generally pulls the attention of acne-causing bacteria.

In addition, this process triggers the IGF-1 to cause skin cells known as keratinocytes to duplicate and multiply, which in turn is a process related with the acne formation.

Furthermore, the link between acne and diet is shown with the results of certain studies conducted on the acne cases in islanders of Papua New Guinea and hunter-gatherers of Paraguay. According to this acne and diet connection study, the appearance of acne is triggered by some environmental factors to which diet is one.

Many have found out through such acne and diet study that limiting grains is an integral step toward optimizing your health, which led the researchers to think that no-grain diet is somehow beneficial for acne.

Today, the acne and diet link is one of the hottest issues in the medical field. Many have claimed that there is only little research regarding the connection between acne and diet for there is no money in it. Some even claimed that doctors and dermatologists only say that diet has nothing to do with acne since they can’t sell you a healthy diet.

Now, come to think of it, underneath it all, acne just like some diseases is caused by diet, but you can’t cure it by just focusing on the diet since some other aggravators are behind it.

Acne refers to plugged pores, pimples, cysts and nodules that occur on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders, upper arms and upper legs, according to the dermatology academy.

While acne isn’t life-threatening, it is disfiguring, can lead to permanent scarring, and is an emotional and social burden.

Acne is caused by changes in hormones, heredity and skin type. Hormones that cause physical maturation also cause sebaceous glands of the skin to produce more sebum, or oil. Male hormones have a greater effect on sebaceous glands than female hormones.

During puberty, the cells of the skin that line sebaceous follicles (the glands with a hair shaft) shed more rapidly. When the cells mix with the increased sebum, they can plug the opening of the follicle and the follicle swells with sebum.

When the skin bacteria called P. acnes multiplies in the clogged hair follicle, the skin becomes inflamed. Sometimes, inflammation spreads to surrounding skin, forming blackheads, pimples and nodules.

Teenagers with parents or a parent who had acne are more likely to get acne themselves. In addition, teens with oily skin have a greater risk of acne than teens with drier skin.

Types of acne

When the plugged follicle (called a comedo) is open, it is called a blackhead. When it’s closed, it’s called a whitehead.

Papules and pustules are commonly called pimples. A papule is a cellular reaction to acne, resulting in small, slightly elevated solid lesions. A pustule is a dome-shaped lesion containing pus.

A macule is the temporary red spot left by a healed acne lesion.

A nodule is a solid lesion that is inflamed, extends into deeper layers of the skin, is painful, and may cause tissue destruction resulting in scarring.

A cyst is a large pustule that is inflamed, extends into deeper layers of the skin, is painful and can result in scarring.

When patients suffer from acne, they are recommended to use a mild cleanser. An inexpensive, non-drying soap used daily is the best way to clean the face. Doctors tell them not to scrub their skin and to avoid harsh cleansers. Most “acne soaps” contain salicylic acid, which can be drying to the skin and can make inflammation worse, especially when combined with medication. Many patients discontinue medical treatment, not realizing it is the soap that is causing irritation.

Patients also give up on using medications because it generally takes at least four to six weeks for them to take effect. It is important for teenagers to understand that their skin may get worse before it gets better. Encourage your teen to “hang in there” and use medicines as prescribed. If skin becomes too dry, it is best to try a non-comedogenic moisturizer, that is, one that does not block pores. Neutrogena and Cetaphil products are quite good, but one can also look for “non-comedogenic” on the label of your preferred moisturizer. Also, one should ask his or her doctor if medication can be taken every other day.

For mild acne, topical antibiotics such as keratolytic are usually prescribed. A keratolytic is an agent that decreases the shedding of skin cells that causes comedones to form. One that is available over-the-counter is benzoyl peroxide. It is available in several strengths (2.5% to 10%), so use the lowest strength that is effective. This medicine also comes in a prescription body wash, which is great for treating larger areas such as the back or chest. Other keratolytics include adapalene and topical tretinoin. These are available by prescription in varying strengths and vehicles such as creams and gels.

If acne becomes more red or inflamed, a topical antibiotic such as clindamycin or erythromycin may be added to treatment. These agents will reduce the amount of pimples on the skin’s surface and decrease inflammation. Many topical antibiotics now come formulated with benzoyl peroxide. Creams or gels with this additive can be used once a day and have been shown to decrease bacterial resistance to the antibiotic.

If acne is cystic, most doctors will recommend an oral antibiotic. The most common include doxycycline, minocycline or erythromycin. An eight-to-12-week course of treatment is recommended for maximum benefit.

Because hormonal changes continue into adulthood, that may impact acne. For example, ovarian cysts and pregnancy may cause hormone changes that lead to acne. And some women get acne when they discontinue birth control pills because those pills help keep acne under control.

Acne that appears for the first time in adulthood should be checked by a doctor. Some drugs and industrial chemicals may induce skin problems. Chronic pressure on the skin – by backpack straps or a violin tucked under the chin, for example – may induce a form of acne.

Patients suffering from severe acne should visit a dermatologist, who will most likely prescribe a course of oral isotretinoin, a more serious medication. Be advised that pregnant women should never take isotretinion.

Acne prevention occurs with a few simple steps. Acne prevention starts by knowing acne occurs when for some unknown reason or combination of reasons, hair follicles become blocked. While the exact combination of reasons that follicles become clogged is not completely known, many things contribute for teenagers and adults alike including; genetics, hormones, dietary and vitamin make up, and stress.

Acne prevention includes understanding other causes, like how your body normally rids itself of its dead skin cells and influences that work against this regularity and your hormones and their effect on your own body’s sebum production.

Second, the normal dead skin cells that combine with your body’s natural sebum oil as it drains through the skin’s surface become clogged in these blocked pores. This substance becomes somewhat sticky, further clogging the passageway.

Third, a bacterium begins to grow around these clogged areas. As a normal reaction your, your body’s white blood cells attack the bacteria, fighting it and pushing it out of the body.

And forth, the resulting growths during this 14-day to 21-day battle are called microcomedones. Microcomedones turn into comedones, commonly referred to as blemishes, pimples or acne.

Statistics indicate that as high as 80% of the entire American population has ever had acne. Acne afflicts all genders, sexes and ages making it a universal skin disorder. As a form of skin disease, the good news is that acne is not transmittable.

Although acne is not contagious from person-to-person, it can spread to the whole face and can severely affect all the skin tissues that have pilosebaceous units. It is not true that acne just affects those going through puberty. Even infants or individuals who may be well over their forties, can develop this skin disorder. Acne infantilis is the term used for acne that grows on newborn babies, on the other hand acne rosacea is related to middle-aged people.

Acne has different classifications, according to the severity of the infection.

Comedo is the form where all severe acne cases originate. This is characterized by red swelling or small lesions on your skin. Whiteheads and blackheads are two forms of comedo. Conversely, blackhead is an open comedo. The coloration is due to the accumulation of dark skin pigments called melanin, plus hardened sebum and other skin debris and particles. This is the basic structure of whiteheads, however, the only difference is the coloration and these are deeply situated into the skin layers.

If you have sandpaper-like skin around the tissue of your mouth and on the surface of your forehead, chin and cheeks, you probably have papules. Pus-filled lesions are also termed as pustules.

Nodules on the other hand are similar with pustules. However, nodules are firmer and are larger acne growing deep in the skin. Inflammation may develop your pustules into containing semi-liquid or liquid materials composed of white blood cells (which are dead because of the acne-infecting bacteria named as Propionibacterium acnes), dead skin cells and active or inactive bacteria. This can result into more serious acne called cysts. In such situations, you may need the assistance of a skin dermatologist or physician.

What is the cause of acne? It is quite difficult to exactly determine what may have caused your acne infection as reasons differ case to case. Studies indicate that the skin disorder may be brought about by many factors, including poor diet, stress, weather elements, and hormone changes or may be genetically influenced.

Medically speaking, acne starts from the formation of hardened sebum, or the oily substance secreted to the skin through the sebaceous glands. This then will be permeated with acne-infecting bacteria, which in return will trigger the immune system to release white blood cells to obstruct the attack of the bacteria. As this happens, dead white blood cells and bacteria will accumulate in the hair follicles mixed with skin debris and dead skin particles, which then will inflame the lesions.

Most mild case acne may be treated with over the counter acne medications. They are generally topical drugs, which you apply on your skin for acne treatment. They may come in the form of soaps, lotions, gels and creams. Conversely, systematic acne medications are taken orally. The most common of which are the antibiotics.

Knowing that you are not the only one inflicted with acne at some point in life or another helps in that there will always be new research and new products coming on stream. Continue to read up on acne research and help your fight against it.

You probably had acne breakouts during your teens. Your mother assured you that “its part of growing up and it’ll clear up soon.” And you found out that your mother was right. The acne did eventually clear up and you lived happily ever after – acne free, right? Wrong!

What can you do when you’re suffering from adult acne? Fortunately, you are not alone. There are countless of people who are suffering the same fate.

Adult Acne

Basically, acne is caused by a malfunctioning sebaceous gland. If your glands produce excessive sebum, you’d suffer from acne regardless of your age. So, adults can still suffer from acne. Because of excessive production of oil, the hair follicle, dirt and bacteria are trapped with the oil or the sebum. This creates an infection which leads to lesions and inflammations.

Is This Common?

Adult acne is fairly common. In fact, more than 50% of adult women experience adult acne at one point in their adult lives. It is less common in male adults. Only about a quarter of male adults suffer from adult acne. Indeed, you can still experience acne when you are at your 20s or 30s and even at your 40s! You still have to cope with acne and all its psychological effect – social embarrassment, insecurity and depression.

What are the Causes of Adult Acne?

There are no exact causes of adult acne. However, the common reason for adult acne is hormonal imbalances. Not surprisingly 1 out of 5 women suffers from this condition because women are more prone to hormone riots. Women tend to have hormonal imbalances when their about to have their menstrual period, or when they’re pregnant, and when they’re going through menopause. Hormonal imbalances may also be triggered by birth control pills or other medications. Other causes of adult acne include:

Simple recurrence of puberty acne. Your acne may just be your puberty acne resurfacing. The reason for this is not clear for researchers. In fact, the exact reasons are not known but this happens a lot.

Medications. Acne in adults is also oftentimes triggered by medications. These medications include anti-epileptic drugs, mood stabilizers like lithium, anabolic steroids, anti-tuberculosis drugs and medications containing iodine.

Skin irritation. Clothing fabric, bags, helmets may cause acne. Frequent irritation may trigger breakouts.

Cosmetics and hair products. Adult women are fond of wearing cosmetics but there are ingredients in some cosmetics that may cause skin irritation. Hair products may also irritate the skin or forehead which also causes acne to form on your forehead.

Unhealthy lifestyle or diet. Not getting enough sleep and exercise does not help with your skin. If you only spare a couple of hours of sleep daily, you can expect your skin to suffer from adult acne.

Adult acne can be treated. It is treated the same way you would treat puberty acne. You should consult with your dermatologist for treatment and prescriptions. You can also try OTC drugs or natural remedies and see what works. However, before you seek treatment, you should first determine the causative factor of your acne.
