What causes baby acne on my newborn (on his cheeks and chin), and how can I help it clear up? I give him a bath daily, but it doesn’t seem to help.
Oh, and my baby is a month-and-a-half old, and his billy cord has already healed and has fallen off. A nightly bath has been helping him sleep 3 hours straight at night, and so I’m not too worried about his skin drying out. It’s very supple; I just had question about the acne! Thanks a ton for all the answers! It’s nice to know that it is just hormones and nothing to worry about much.

Understanding Baby Acne

If you think that acne is a problem only teenagers and adults face, think again. Infants can also have signs of acne. They could have breakouts as early as 2-3 weeks after birth. Baby acne is more common in the in the facial area (cheeks, chin and forehead) and they can even have back acne in this early stage of life.

Baby acne should not be mistaken with milia or eczema. Milia are also known as milk spots. These are small, hard and white-colored spots that usually disappear in about two weeks. Eczema, on the other hand, is a type of skin inflammation and is more serious than acne. Symptoms of eczema include scaling and blisters. Whiteheads are also an issue and these are small bumps, either white or flesh-colored, that are caused by blocked pores. You would know that your child has acne if pimples start to appear within their first month.

Baby Acne

It is quite common for newborn babies to have acne. It can be present at birth or usually  it appears after a couple of weeks,  predominantly on the cheeks and sometimes on the forehead, chin or back in the form of whiteheads, blackheads and pustules.

The causes of baby acne as with adolescent one are not clear. It can occur as the result of hormonal changes, when  babies receive hormones from their mother at the end of pregnancy or just through mother’s milk. These hormones are naturally passed through the placenta and are responsible for aiding the survival of a newborn once they have left the womb. The hormones help stimulate lung maturation, but they also result in increased oil gland activity. So, it is this increased gland production that may lead to baby acne. However, there are  other factors, viewed as possible acne causes. For example, taking certain medications while nursing or pregnancy can provoke skin disorder as well.
