Does anyone have any suggestions in getting rid of cystic acne?
I went to the dermatologist 2 years ago and she insisted that I take a huge bottle of these pills that she pescribed to me as opposed to a certain cream I was asking for because I hate taking pills. Before I go back and see a different dermatologist, does anyone have any suggestions on what to do?
Laser isn’t an option at the moment. And please dont tell me Clean and Clear, Clearasil, Murad, ProActive will do the trick because they only treat “regular” pimples as opposed to cystic acne and I’ve tried all of them
…The pills that the 1st dermatologist pescribed also interfered with my bc pills, which was another reason why I decided not to take them anymore.
I’ve heard from a lot of people that washing your face too much will increase the amount of oil on your face especially during summer. I think Cetaphil will only work if you have pimples that have risen to the top of your skin. Cystic are pimples that are deep in your skin and create huge red annoying bumbs on your face

Have you tried Cetaphil? I had horrible acne for years, and using the cleanser twice a day and moisturizer in the morning really helped. It didn’t clear everything up though, nothing besides something from your doctor will do that. When I did see my doctor, she told me to use Cetaphil, and was peased when I told her I had. Then she perscribed some topical creams which really helped. With serious acne, the only way to truly be rid of it is to see a doctor. Check online at places like Yahoo for “dermatologist, location, state” and you should get some ratings, or get a recommendation from a friend.
I’d waited years to treat my acne, beyond high school and beyond college because I was afraid of how the medications would make me look (dry, red flaky) but I found a great dermatologist who worked with me when i said I was afraid of this reaction and didn’t want to take pills. Because I spoke up the stuff she prescribed was gentle, yet so effective. Also, don’t be afraid to call your dermatologist, one of the creams made my skin incredibly dry, but I just kept using it. At my next appointment my doctor told me I should have called because the dryness was a sign I needed to use it less…
No matter what, don’t be discouraged, you can be rid of acne, and I know from experience the products you listed above don’t work, but I do know that for me, seeing my dermatologist and using Cetaphil finally got rid of my acne after 13 years. Good luck!
I think your best advice is getting a 2nd opinion – and help with a treatment and orally – but have you looked in to Clear Advantage by Arbonne – it is not like the treatments you listed as it comes with a pill (vitamin) to take orally to fight acne -
before it starts (naturally) and the regime is less harsh for you over all then the treatments you may get.
Obviously you need help – but do you use a shampoo for oily hair? Do a deep cleaning mask once a week
take vitamins a e and c and zinc
wash face twice a day with a regime of any kind?
Exfoliate twice a week on a clean face??
If you have a severe case of cystic acne and all other treatment has failed, the dermatologist may suggest Accutane. I’d avoid it completely though. Not only is it very expensive, but it’s been linked to severe birth defects, depression, and liver disease.
The only two ointments that I’ve heard of to treat cystic acne are Benzaclin and Tazorac. You may want to see if the dermatologist is open to trying one of those first.
To clear cystic acne the only truly successful treatment is Accutane. I had cystic acne and tried everything but nothing worked. Accutane is the only thing that cleared up my face. And it also doesn’t interfere with bc pills. The Accutane program actually requires that a woman is on the pill at the same time she takes Accutane due to the side effects to the fetus. Ask about it the next time you go to the dermatologist. Although it has lots of side effects, I believe it was the best decision I have made regarding my skin. The only side effects I experienced were dry lips and dry skin.
