Cystic & Nodulocystic Acne-Reasons and Treatment
Cystic acne, also known as nodulocystic acne, is a severe type of acne vulgaris. Main symptom of cystic acne is deep breakouts with severe inflammation all over the body including face. These blemishes can grow large than normal acne.
Though all severe acnes are called cystic acne, actually cystic acnes are those where cysts develop at the location of infection. This the most severe form of acne. A soft lump can be felt just underneath the skin; this is actually a fluid-filled bag under the skin. Real cystic acne is very painful.
Nodulocystic acne is often referred as cystic acne; however, there is a basic difference between the two. People suffering from nodulocystic acne develop nodules and cysts both. Nodules are hard lumps that form deep under the skin. According to some skin doctors, acne cysts are basically a group of nodular breakouts – it takes long time to cure cystic acne.
Cystic acne is a common problem among teens, especially boys and young men. However, it can affect teenage girls and women as well. Acne problems are often genetic – if somebody in your family had acnes, chances are high that you will suffer from severe acne problems.
Reasons behind Cystic and Nodulocystic Acne:
It is important to know the causes of cystic acne; otherwise you cannot decide how to get rid of them. Here is a list:
1] Excessive oil secretion from sebaceous glands
2] Excessive dead skin cells on skin and within the follicles
3] Presence of acne bacteria
Once you know the reasons, you can clearly understand how to get rid of cystic acne and how to prevent them. You have to control oiliness, must remove dead skin cells and use some medicines to remove the acne-causing bacteria.
Treatments for Cystic and Nodulocystic Acne:
Consult a skin doctor to know how to treat cystic acne. People suffering from cystic or nodulocystic acne need medication; it is difficult to control the disease when it reaches such an extent. A doctor would suggest a series of treatment in order to cure existing outbreaks and prevent future infections.
1] Antibiotics: Oral antibiotic pills are generally prescribed to make the acne-causing bacteria inactive. Some antibacterial lotions, soaps and face and handwash are also recommended to inhibit bacterial activities.
2] Skin care: Dead skin cells must be removed so that the hair follicles do not get clogged. At the same time, excess oil must be wiped out. A healthy skin care regimen along with cleansing and moisturizing can help you keep your skin clean and maintain optimum oil content.
3] Surgical methods: In this process a skin doctor makes a small skin incision through which the infected matter is extracted.
Apart from these, isotretinoin and intralesional corticosteroid injections are also used to cure cystic acne.
