Acne and pimples are known to be associated with prepubescent and teenaged populations but to our surprise adult acne is not uncommon. People who didn’t suffered from acne or any such bad skin problems in their teenage years are embarrassed and little confused to discover that they have been affected by adult acne just when they assumed they were free from acne for ever. They wonder that the acne is restricted to adolescents but the truth is that adult acne is very common. Figures show that nearly 40% of all acne cure products in the United States alone are bought and consumed by adults suffering from acne problems either from teenage age or when they were adult.

There are many reasons for the occurrence of acne problems. There is a myth about acne that it occurs because of poor personal hygiene which is not true. Acne problem is a result of hormonal imbalances or blocked pores on the skin in most of the cases including adult acne problems. The other cause of adult acne may be the infection of the sebaceous glands or faulty closing of the hair ducts on the face. Cure of acne depends on its condition and the skin type. Acne may be more or less depending on various factors. Embarrassed, confused and upset adults usually go to the local pharmacist to check for remedy of acne problem but this may actually cause more harm than good. Medicines and treatments created specifically to deal with acne among younger populations may not have the strength or the capability to deal with adult acne. The causes of adult acne may differ greatly as compared to the teenage problems.

Adult acne that seems similar to regular acne needs more strong medicines and treatment. Always consult a dermatologist if you are suffering from adult acne. Only a dermatologist can determine what caused the adult acne at this age. Treatment can be started once proper diagnosis is done. There may be a simple drug that might be able to eradicate the problem forever. Adult acne is more common than normally imagined but all adults with adult acne must remember that it is nothing to be embarrassed about. It is better to consult a dermatologist to get rid of this acne problem than to try luck at the local drugstore trying to find a diagnosis and a cure for your problem and who knows that may increase the problem and not to mention the side effects of unperceived medicine.

Question by Tina: What is the difference of adult acne and regular acne?
I was doing a research I guess on body acne and saw one body wash that said was better if you have adult acne. Does that mean your an adult with acne or what?

Best answer:

Answer by Candace Grant
When you’re a teen, you get acne caused by hormones which will go away as you reach a certain stage of physical maturity. If you have acne into your twenties or later, the problem is less likely hormonal and more likely caused by a variety of other factors, like diet, lifestyle, hygiene, and daily habits.

Answer by Ginger H
I have the same problem, and so does my daughter, so I got some cetaphil thinking since it is gentle and all it would be good for both of us. I havent seen any improvment at all in using it for a month. I now have started using an oil cleansing method and seeing some relief…who would think in my 30′s Id be dealing with this!

When you mention acne most people instantly think of hormonal teenagers standing in front of the bathroom mirror refusing to go to school because of a pimple on the end of his or her nose. Acne isn’t necessarily like that, though. It’s true that Acne does appear to be a hormonal affliction but it isn’t true that it’s only teenagers who can get it. Adult men and women can suffer from adult acne at any age and it is not uncommon to see people of 40 suffering quite badly. Adult acne can be just as serious as teen acne causing depression and social anxiety in people of all ages and from all backgrounds.

Adult acne really is a lot more widespread than you might imagine. 25% of adult men and up to as many as 50% of adult women are expected to suffer from adult acne at some point during their adult lives. It really is a lot more common than you probably imagine and there is no reason to be ashamed by it.The exact causes of adult acne, like teen acne, remain unknown. Certainly hormones have a big part to play in people of any age contracting acne but the exact relation nobody knows. Because of it’s similarity, though, the treatments and prevention for adult acne are virtually identical to those of teen acne and are easy to use or follow.Acne, in general, is one of the most common medical problems in the world and it is estimated that 30% of all visits to dermatologists will be due to acne. However, because the world looks at acne as a teen problem they fail to realize the mental anguish that adult sufferers can face. Adult acne can lead to serious depression and social anxiety as grown men and women become afraid to go out in public.Scrubbing and scrubbing your pimples will not help. It is more likely to open up sores that can become easily infected. These will look a lot worse than any acne pimples and can leave some quite visible scarring. Cleansing is fine but you should avoid scratching or picking. There are a large number of natural botanical remedies to help with adult acne that you may want to consider trying. Dandelion and Burdock are both proven to help as are Lavender, Dock Root, Turmeric and Strawberry Leaves. There are many more natural solutions that are very easy to find and even easier to incorporate into your daily lives.

Article by Paul Resnick

Recent studies have documented the trend noticed by many Dermatologists that post-adolescent acne is increasing, particularly in women. The reasons for why their are more women with acne are becoming better understood. It is hoped that this new understanding will lead to more appropriate therapies for adult women. New over the counter treatments are emerging, particularly combination therapies based on alpha hydroxy acids that are more suited for aging skin.

Research shows that up to 14% of adult women aged between 25 and 45 suffer from some form of acne. (Knaggs, et al) Reasons are not fully understood. Use of cosmetics, hormone abnormalities and prescription drug use are often cited as causes. For example the role of the hormone, androgen in adult acne has been extensively studied. Elevated levels of androgen have been correlated with excessive facial sebum, or oil in the facial skin, one of the primary symptoms associated with acne. However researchers find that the majority of adult women who suffer from acne do not have abnormal androgen levels or hormone disorders. Confusing the entire hormone/adult acne connection, is that oral contraceptives or other estrogen therapies effective in controlling androgen levels can be effective in controlling acne.

Researchers also point to increasing levels of stress as the primary cause of periodic breakouts in adult women. Correlations have been found for example between acne and high stress occupations and a correlation between stress and androgen has been documented. (Karrer-Voegeli, et al)

In general Dermatologists report utilizing the same general principles of acne treatment for both adult women and adolescents, but there are differences in adolescent acne and adult acne, that suggest different therapeutic approaches. Researchers see, for example, an increase in facial pore size in adult women. Also oral antibiotics appear to work slower in older women and oral contraceptives to control acne have different contraindications in adolescents than in adult women. Adult women are also less sensitive to the irritating effects of benzoyl peroxide, the active ingredient of most over-the-counter acne treatments. However, Adult women do suffer more from the skin drying effects of benzoyl peroxide. This is particularly difficult situation for adult women with persistent or adult onset acne. They are typically unable to use skin moisturizers to counter these skin-drying effects as moisturizers often aggravate acne.

More nuanced approaches to over-the-counter topical adult acne treatments are needed. A number of studies have pointed to alpha hydroxy acids as therapeutic agents that could be particularly appropriate for older women. (Bowe WP, et al) Alpha hydroxy acids have moisturizing properties and several products have been developed and used successfully, notably the prescription product, Lac-Hydrin, Alpha Clear Acne Treatment by Niora and a variety of products by Murad. These companies pioneered the use of topically applied fruit acids in moisturizers formulated for adults with acne. Alpha hydroxy acids do not have the direct anti-bacterial effect of benzoyl peroxide, but they do micro exfoliant surface tissue and tend to reduce pore size, two factors which indirectly inhibit bacterial growth, and as an anti-aging side benefit tend to improve the appearance and health of the skin.

Because alpha hydroxy acids have both effective anti-acne and anti-aging properties the potential exists to utilize these safe and well known substances in more over-the-counter treatments. Dermatologists continue to research alpha hydroxy acids and the results from more studies are anticipated in the near future.

Question by tjnw79: Adult acne?
Does anyone know or have any home remedies for adult acne? My friend has tried everything from over the counter facial cleaners and so forth to actually seeing a dermatologist. She has been on actutane and it did nothing for her. I am wondering if there is any types of food she can eat (other then vitamin A) foods that will help clear her skin or any other concuctions that can help. Also does anyone know of the levulan procedures? how well do they work and are they worth paying 800 dollars per treatment?

Best answer:

Answer by Bitter
Go to the pharmacy and ask your pharmacist for the pill that treats acne from the inside out. She might have a pH or some other chemical imbalance that is causing the acne if topical medications don’t work. When is the last time she’s had a physical with full blood work-up?
The pharmacist will know what you’re talking about..I forget the name, but you can Google this, I’m sure.

What is Adult acne?
Adult Acne is a widely used term for whiteheads and blackheads plugged pores, deeper lumps and even pimples, which mostly occur in the chest, neck, back, upper arms and even on face.

Adult Acne also affects teenagers and young people to some extent. Nevertheless, adult acne is not confined to any specific age group; any one can get adult acne from the age of 15 to 40. It is not a life threatening problem but adults can be disfiguring and upsetting. When severe, adult acne can tend to permanent and serious scarring.

Types of Adult Acne

Normally there are 4 types of adult acne:
1)	Comedo.
2)	Pustule.
3)	Nodule.
4)	Cyst.

Causes of Adult Acne:

Adult acne is a condition of sebaceous glands. Sebaceous glands are very close to hair follicles, which produce and secrete sebum (an oily substance.) An adult acne lesion occurs when a hair follicle is plugged with dead cells and sebum.

The most important disease-causing (pathogenic) events in sebaceous glands are believed to be changes in the levels of androgenic hormones in the body. This pathogenic factor mostly occurs during the growth period of individual between the age of 13 to 20.

That’s why adult acne mostly occurs at the onset of adulthood. If you are over 40 and still suffering from adult acne, then the two most probable causes of your adult acne are:

1)	Recurrence of adult acne that disappeared after adolescence.

2)	Flare-up of adult acne after a period of relative quietness—for instance, during pregnancy.
If you are having acne for the first time then you should visit a dermatologist.

Some causes of adult acne are:

1) Medications. Some medications, which might be the cause of adult acne, include anabolic steroids, anti-epileptics drugs and anti-tuberculosis drugs.
2)	Chronic physical pressure on the skin. Acne mechanica is also one of the most important causes of adult acne.
3)	Chlorinated industrial chemicals can also be counted as one of the important causes of adult acne.
4)	Changes in the hormonal balance also cause adult acne.

Adult acne treatment:
Adult acne treatment depends on the scarring of your skin and the degree of adult acne that has spread in your body. Adult acne treatment needs commitment from both doctors and patients.

Adult acne treatments have the following actions:
1)	Keratolytic reduce the blockage in the duct of the sebaceous gland and hair allowing the sebum to flow more freely out of the gland.

2)	Anti- inflammatory treatments reduce the degree of inflammation.

3)	Sebum reducers just reduce the production of sebum thus reducing acne.

4)	Antibacterial treatments can be taken by mouth or applied tropically on the skin. Adult acne treatment reduces the amount of bacteria and inhibits the production of chemical, which can cause inflammation.
If you are affected with adult acne then you should include the following in your daily diet along with these recommended vitamins and minerals:
•	Include vitamin A rich foods like carrot, liver, sweet potatoes, mangoes, spinach, and cantaloupe because it reduces production of serum and keratin.
•	You should take Vitamin E in your diet because it helps to play a critical role in protecting skin from bacteria.
•	Take herbal tonics for the betterment of skin.

If you were part of the majority of people that were unlucky to be plagued with teen acne, just think of all the snickers, jests and humiliation you had to go through, then it easier for you to understand why most adult acne sufferers go through a lot of hassles to remove adult acne from their lives. We both know that adult acne is not a terminal disease (you can’t die from having it, I guess you knew that uhhh?). The major thing acne gives us are ugly scars and sometimes they could be really ugly, like mine was at a certain time.

Most of we adults afflicted with acne are usually on the look out for the magical cure that would gives us the fresh and smooth face or skin we had when we were eleven years old. Before we go on a wild goose chase looking for the magical acne medication that would rid us of adult acne lets understand why and how these little annoying monsters grow on our faces.

Why do so many adults still have acne?

It seems from all the amount spent on all those expensive research they still tell us the same thing that we were have all read in encyclopedias, the major cause of adult acne always has something to do with our hormones running wild and also genetics (my dad had a very bad case of acne when he was younger, more severe than mine was). The genetics part simply means that your biological family history has a large chunk of the blame of why you are suffering from adult acne. But aside those there are some other factors that are responsible for worsening your acne condition, some of them include:

*Side effects from some drugs – (such as corticosteroids, androgenic steroids, and lithium)

*Picking at or squeezing at the pimples

*Harsh scrubbing of the skin

*Oil based cosmetic products – (I guess you know this one already)

*Stress, illness or exhaustion

*Heat and moisture

*Diet has a some amount of influence on acne – (and please eating chocolate does not cause acne, where the heck did you hear that from)

*Pregnancy

*Menstruation

*Menopause

How does Adult Acne form on the Skin?

The formation of adult acne as we all know has something to do with sebum, follicle and all those big words that I read in some 21 inches thick encyclopedia. In simple words it is formed when oil (also know as sebum) that is produced underneath the skin surface is blocked from reaching the skin surface where it always flows to, through a hair-containing canal called a “follicle”.

The follicle wall sheds cells often and the canal is used to remove dead cells, which sort of become sticky and block the opening as they attempt to leave the follicle. The blockage results in increased bacteria growth in the follicle, which turns the trapped sebum into a very irritating substance and results in an inflammation that is widely known as acne.

Pheww!!! All that explanation reminds me of high school biology (so painfully boring to me).

In one sentence on how acne forms it is simply put as “Dead skin cells clog the pores, and bacteria cause inflammation which results in acne on the skin”.

Although so many adults like you have tried many acne medications and cosmetics to combat acne, we tend to wonder why they seem not to get rid of the problem once and for all but still they re-occur. It seems that acne forms when one or more of these conditions occurs:

*A blockage in the follicle

*There is an over production of sebum (oil)

*Increased bacteria growth within the hair follicle.

Researchers have found out that the hormone responsible for acne, which is called “testosterone”. Yes you have heard of it before it is the male hormone (it is found in both males and females but it is produced in high levels in males). Testosterone is responsible for increasing production of sebum (oil), which results in more pimples. Since testosterone is an androgen and is more in males than females, this explains why men tend to have more severe cases of acne than women (at least that explains why I used to have more pimples on my face than my elder sister although she started having pimples on her face before I started having mine).

Adult acne occurs as visible bumps on the surface of the skin usually on the face, although body acne is also common. Adult Acne is seen as pus-filled blisters; small reddish bumps, ugly looking thick red skin on the nose, cheeks and forehead, and small reddish blood vessels all seen on the skin surface. Acne outbreaks usually occur on the face, neck, chest, and shoulders and back. A highbrow term for adult acne is “acne rosacea”.

For so many folks stress seems to be one of the major factors in aggravating their acne condition. When I was in college towards the end of the semester when the amount of work we had to do increases, I tend to have more break outs of pimples maybe as a result of the stress or because I had lesser time for acne skin care. It seems aside the fact that you have to contend with hormones and genetics being the major cause of you acne condition you also have things like stress to worsen it.

Achieving Acne Control with the best Acne Medication

The first step in treating your adult acne condition has to do with proper acne skin care.

First of all AVOID the temptation of SQUEEZING your PIMPLES. Most of the time this results in the scars you see on your face. The bigger a pimple is the higher the chances it will leave a scar if you “pop” it.

Remember to wash your skin gently only twice a day; this is very helpful in removing surface dirt and excessive oil, which could worsen your acne condition by clogging the pores. Also please do not use abrasive soaps. They could damage your skin pores and leave your skin too dry.

If you currently use oil-based cosmetics it’s time you switch to water-based, non-comedogenic cosmetics as oil-based creams or lotions irritate oily skin and cause further breakouts and blemishes.

You should also make it a habit to always remove your makeup before going to bed.

Consider applying an oil-free moisturizer to your skin after washing. This helps your skin replenish its own moisture and keeps the oil glands from over producing.

Always remember to shampoo regularly. This prevents oily hair from rubbing off on your skin.

Like we learnt in biology class, a balanced diet is necessary for optimum health. A balanced diet and drinking 10-12 glasses of water a day can help keep your skin healthy. There are some physicians that believe that an increase in iodine consumption aggravates acne and recommend a reduction or elimination of fish and iodized salt.

Relax a little to reduce stress and try planning out your activities so you are not under a lot of pressure from your daily activities.

In case you are looking for a more aggressive adult acne treatment to totally banish those little monsters of your face/body you should try using a combination of treatment like that offered by clear pores system which consists of a facial/body wash, facial/body protection cream and a herbal supplement which fights the acne from the inside and the outside. This triple combination is guaranteed to get rid of acne from your life.

Another very impressive acne treatment available is acnezine, which has natural ingredients that work to take care of the skin. They help control free radicals that cause skin damage, aging and wrinkling, and that can contribute to infection. Acnezine limits inflammation, helping take care of the ugly redness, and working to limit the inflammatory response that can cause scarring. And, Acnezine promotes healing. Acnezine consists of skin anti-Oxidant Capsules and acne Moisturizing Crème which ensures acne is combated from both inside and outside the body.

Assuming you were one of the teenagers that sufferered acne while growing up, just think of all the snorts, ridicule, disgrace and chagrin you went through, that is when you can really understand what adult suffers undergo to get rid of their acne problems.

It is believed that you can’t die of acne, you only suffer scars, and sometimes it could be very disgusting, like mine was sometime ago. Majority of adults who suffers severe acne, scouts for supernatural cure that will leave their face as smooth as ever or bringing out the beauty that will turn them into sweet-sixteen.

Before you are burdened with the quest for supernatural acne remedy that will cure your adult acne, lets unravel why you are bedeviled with this annoying piece that grows on your face. Why do so many adults still have acne? The resources, time and energy spent on all those costly findings, confirmed what we already know, read from reliable sources and reference materials that the actual trigger of acne has something to do with our hormones and genes.

(My dad had a bad experience with acne while growing, more serious than mine). The genetic part points to the fact that your hereditary i.e. your family background can be traced to the reason why you are an adult acne sufferer. Besides, the following conditions may be the cause or aggravate the problem: Consequential effects from medication – (such as corticosteroids, androgenic steroids, and lithium) Crushing pimples Rough scrubbing of the skin Oily cosmetic products Heat and moisture Dieting can effect an acne – (eating chocolate does not trigger acne) Pregnancy Menstruation Menopause How does Adult Acne grow on the Skin surface?

The growth of Adult Acne as believed by a school of thought has a lot to do with secretion, vesicle and those big scientific phrases. Meaning that it develops when oily secretion, produced below the skin surface is blocked from reaching the skin surface i.e. the actual destination, through a hair- containing duct called a vesicle. The vesicle wall shed cells most of the time and the duct removes dead cells, which kind of become gummy, blocking the opening as they attempt to leave the vesicle. It eventually aggravates an increase the bacteria development in the vesicle, which turns the secretion into a very annoying substance and results in inflammation that is called acne.

I guess all this explanation might be annoying or boring to you. But remember, your adult acne will soon become a thing of the past. In the real sense of it, the summary of acne formation is put this way, “Dead skin cells clogs the holes, and bacteria aggravates inflammation resulting to acne” Really many grown adults in your circle have tried alot of acne remedies and cosmetics to fight acne, but eventually with little or no result and in no time the acne resurfaces. Therefore, acne is likely to form under any of this condition: A blockage in the vesicle Excess of oil secretion Increased bacteria growth within the hair vesicle. Science have discovered that “testosterone” i.e. the hormone responsible for the formation of acne.

You must be familiar with this by now that testosterone is actually a male hormone ( it can be found in both sexes but dominant in the male more than the female counterpart). Testosterone aggravates an increase in oil secretion leading to pimples. Since science has proved that testosterone is dominant in males, most of the serious acne sufferers will be found in male and not the female.

Pimples can be found on male faces more than the female at times. Adult acne usually appear as visible swelling on the skin surface, although body acne is also common. Adult acne can be seen as pus-forming bacteria i.e. little reddish swelling, horrible-looking solid red skin on the nose, cheeks and forehead, and it could be tiny blood vessels that is visible on the skin surface. Most of the time, acne breakout on the facial part, shoulders, back, neck and can also be found on the chest.

Another word for adult acne is “acne rosacea” Stress has been one of the major factors that trigger acne problems of most people. It turns out this way, when you are busy with a lot of day-to-day activities with little or no time to take care of your skin, you will discover that breakout like pimples increases at the speed of light. The genetic and hormonal imbalances are major issues to consider, but stress can really make it worse.

How Do You Achieve the Best Acne Control with Acne Medications?

In getting the best desired result for your acne problems, you must give consideration to proper skin care. Your major priority is to avoid CRUSHING your pimples. Doing this will turn out to scars on your face. The size of a pimple will determine the chances of leaving scars on your face if you burst it.

Never forget to wash your skin twice daily, which will remove dirt and excessive oily substances from your face, which could aggravates the acne condition when the holes are blocked. Avoid abrasive materials which could leave your skin too dry. If you current line of cosmetics are oily, it is advised to avoid them and start using water-based, non-comedogenic cosmetics as oily cosmetics irritates oily skin and lead to more breakout on the skin surface.

Cultivate the habit of removing your make-ups before retiring to bed. You can apply an oil-free moisturizer to your skin immediately after the washing exercise. It will renew your skin and regulate the oil glands for excessive producing. Apply shampoo consistently which will prevent oily hair from rubbing off on your skin.

As we all know, that the body requires balanced diet to attain peak performance. Increasing the glasses of water you take daily will add glamour to your skin. Reduce iodine consumption which can actually triggers acne. Create time to relax your nerves, plan and prioritize your itineraries to reduce pressure. Possible you are passionate about getting rid of adult acne quickly with positive results that will leave your face fresh and smooth.

Try out the trinity combination of treatment which are: facial/body wash, facial/body protection cream and a herbal supplements which cures acne from within and without. Surefire way to get rid of adult acne once and for all. Other reliable way to tackle acne is using acnezine, contain natural ingredients that takes care of the skin surface. It regulates radicals that damages the skin, aging and wrinkling which can lead to infection. Acnezine limits inflammation, which will prevent the ugly reddish skin and scarring. Besides, acnezine promotes healing. It also contain skin anti-oxidant capsules and acne moisturizing crème which kills acne from within and without.

Dry skin is the side effect of other acne treatments, but using lotion will moisturize the skin.
Cleaning the Face with Cleanser: wash your face at least twice a day using facial cleanser or mild soap; it reduces acne causing dirt like bacteria and dead skin cells.
Relevant Acne Creams: Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic acid are the two most effective acne medications. They help in killing bacteria and are best used after washing your face.
Light & Laser: blue light and Laser therapy destroy acne bacteria within a short term.
May be expensive but they are great for treating acne and scars in a short time.
Diet: one of the things you can also do to improve your skin appearance or bring balance to your skin is to change your diet. Get plenty of sleep and eat fresh vegetable, fruits also drinking plenty of water.
So are you looking for adult acne treatment that will give you a lifetime solution to acne?

Acne is not a problem targeting teenagers but adults as well. Adult acne treatment is slightly different from the ones used by teenagers as their skin texture and condition is different. In this article, I’d like to share with you a brief description of adult acne plus the ways to treat adult acne.

Adult acne is different from teenagers acne therefore, the way to treat it is different. For adults, acne most often occurs around the lower cheek and chin areas and the acne are deeper and bigger compared to the ones on teenagers.

Although it is not true that adults don’t get smaller and minor acne such as blackheads, whiteheads and types that are mostly on the surface, it is just that majority of the acne on adults are deeper in the skin and needs more than over the counter treatments like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide.

As a more severe case of acne, adults are recommended to consult dermatologist for advice. Doctors and dermatologist will most likely recommend a combination of a few treatments such as cream and medicine prescription.

Oral medication will need to be taken during the acne treatment such as when you are in the period of treating your acne, when your acne flares during hormonal changes such as menstruation, taking bad food and such.

Other therapies for adult acne includes laser and light therapies that many people will opt for as it is common that people do not want to be dependent on putting on creams or taking oral medication for a long time. However, light therapies and laser are costly and people usually have to undergo several treatments.

Treating adult acne will require extra care due to several reasons. Adult skin is not as strong as teenagers and has less elasticity, suppleness, less oily and also recovers at a slower rate. As adult acne is much more severe, it needs extra care, advice and monitoring to ensure that it heals the best as it can. The above information is to give you a list of available acne treatment that you can choose from to suit your preference and also to help you know the consequences of the choices you will make. However, it is always recommended to consult a dermatologist or a doctor before purchasing or trying the acne treatments to avoid wasting money or putting your skin at risk of being damage.

I’ve also started to notice scarring on my face from past breakouts. Can someone explain why this is happening and recommend ways to help get this problem under control? I’ve been trying different store bought acne creams but they haven’t helped much and also irritate my skin. Thanks very much in advance for your help.
